I have gratitude for your story, the way you tell it and allowing us to hear it. I have so many questions about how we do medicine. Thank you for bringing awareness to listen to your body and not dismiss nor let anyone else dismiss your knowing that something is wrong. Love you Maija!

As I mature through life, I am learning more and more to listen to my body and to self-advocate in the presence of my medical providers. And listening to my intuition, my inner voice and my inner authority. It sure takes time and I am learning patience, self-compassion and humor on the journey.

Thank you Maija for sharing this information. I can relate to how you can relate being out of breath to "I'm just out of shape ". I did this when I was 40...turned out to be hyperthyroidism but I convinced myself if you took a month break from training for a triathlon at 40, because your gramma died, that the result was you would be in awful shape. Took a few months to figure out. Your story will help people. And, i loved the wedding pictures:-) xo

Having watched you go through that experience by blood pressure rises, yet again, as I read the story.

What you said is SO very true: "be your own advocate"!!! Doctor's are no longer the Marcus Welby of days gone by. They are pushed to meet goals (X # of patients per hour), among many other criteria none of which are about patient care.

98% of most physicians disregard women in general and women's complaints in specific.

You are SUCH a mild mannered person by nature I am still amazed someone finally listened.

To all the women reading this remember Maija's words. Her story is not a rare one. Doctors (of any gender) tend to pat us on our heads and send us home with 2 Tylenol and "call me in the morning" more often than not. Get in their face. Talk to their supervisors. Call the head of the medical practice or HMO if you have to, but get yourselves heard.

Leslie shared your moving testimony with me. I’m stunned, but also grateful to hear the very much alive voice of an old friend. I’ve crossed paths with your story in many others I know and care about, my mother in particular. Physicians are human I guess. I’m confident your testimony will help others. Your message is at once common sense and profound. Each of us are our own best experts. Peace, Maija.
